Situated in a loop in the Aube, the commune of Bayel enthusiastically perpetuates its master glass making tradition. At the crystal factory, the flame is passed on from generation to generation to produce the clearest and most finely worked crystal.
If the work of glass making goes back to about 1300, it all really started in 1666 when Jean-Baptiste Mazzolay arrived. This Venetian brought the secret of the Masters of Murano with him. Louis XIV, taken by the brightness of the glass, gave him permission to start a Royal factory in Bayel to supply Versailles with crystal...
Today “Cristalleries Royales de Champagne” have kept this prestigious name, synonymous with great know-how.
A visit that will take your breath away
Visiting a crystal factory is a fascinating and captivating spectacle: before your very eyes, the glass blowers draw the molten crystal in order to work it. The moulded or blown crystal takes on its shape via precise gestures, inherited from ancestral know-how. With disconcerting speed, the master glassmakers create very high quality works of art while you watch.
