This Aube town, hidden away in the shadow of Brie plateau and Traconne forest has three riches: the stained glass windows in its church created by David Tremlett and Simon Marq’s studio inaugurated in 2005, its Champagne vineyards and its clay pits.
Villenauxe was one of France’s richest sources of clay, exploited by the “gueules grises” (grey faces) clay miners, and famous for its pottery. Already in the 19th century, it was producing high quality porcelain and biscuit. A tradition that is being continued through famous craftsmen.
The stained glass windows in Villenauxe la Grande Church
In 2005 Villenauxe-la-Grande experienced a remarkable cultural event: the creation by David Tremlett, the British artist of international renown in conjunction with the workshop of Simon Marq, the master glassworker in Reims, of all the 24 bays of Saint Peter and Saint Paul Church covering an area of approximately 200 m2. This represents the largest project in the field of stained glass for 20 years.
An explosion of colours that varies minute by minute according to the light outside, the abstract work then takes on its full meaning.
Proud of this treasure, the Villenauxe la Grande commune organizes guided tours of the church and its stained glass windows.
