Coclois “phantom chateau” park

These formal gardens were designed as the setting for a chateau that was never built. In fact, the Revolution destroyed Marquis Louis II des Réaulx’s dream.

In its current state, the 17 hectare garden can be said to be formal due to its straight paths that create a star pattern and its immense perspective.

Walnuts and other fruit trees have replaced the kitchen garden of the time. The garden also has a dovecote, surrounded by tall box hedges.

All these elements, as well as the family house (the marquis lived there while waiting for his new chateau to be built), are slightly offset with regard to the main perspective of the park. The space was created to accommodate this chateau, the first stone of which was never laid.
