The Saint-Loup Museum

The Museum of Fine Art and Archaeology is in Saint-Loup Abbey which originally occupied the site where the current Saint-Martin-ès-Aires Abbey now stands. Destroyed at the end of the 9th century, it was rebuilt in the 12th century close to the cathedral, in its present location.

Museum of Fine Arts

Troyes Museum of Fine Art offers visitors a very harmonious collection of French paintings from the 14th to the 19th centuries. The great stylistic movements that marked painting over these five centuries are represented here, very often, by leading works.

Among the masterpieces on display: Rubens’ “Man with a lute”, Watteau’s “The Enchanter” and “The Adventuress”, Bernardo Belloto’s “Ruins of Dresden”, and “Spirit of Baculard d’Arnaud”, dubbed the young girl with a cat by Jean-Baptiste Greuze.

But the museum also has the 3rd collection of French 19th sculpture after Orsay and Angers in reserve!

The Museum of Archaeology

Like the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Archaeology owes its existence to the confiscations of the Revolution. Since then, the collections have grown ceaselessly due to legacies and donations, in particular that of the Pouan Treasure (burial artefacts from a princely tomb dating from the 5th century) donated by Emperor Napoleon III in 1861, and to purchases like that of the magnificent Vaupoisson Apollo acquired in 1820.

Over the years, major work to develop the city and the region has brought numerous remains to light which have been added to the initial collection.
