Eglise Saint-Jean-Baptiste à Chaource |
This Gothic church, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, contains countless statues harmoniously blending styles from the Champagne region to Italian art. Construction of the chancel began at the end of the 12th century, while the nave and side chapels were built between 1531 and 1548. It is renowned for its "Entombment" scene, created in 1515, and its gilded wooden nativity scene dating from the 16th century. The church can be visited like a museum, where the numerous sculptures harmoniously showcase the diverse styles of Champagne and Italian art. Also noteworthy is its organ, a listed historical monument in perfect working order. The carved wooden case and twisted columns date from the late 17th century. The instrument, comprising twenty-five stops, is the work of Louis Le Bé (1698). Open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from April to October and from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from November to March. The Othe Armance Tourist Office offers guided tours by reservation. Contact the Chaource Tourist Information Office at +33 (0)3 25 40 97 22. Please note that the Entombment of Christ will be closed from spring 2026 for restoration. (https://www.chaource-miseautombeau.fr/restauration-de-la-mise-au-tombeau/)
