The Gandelus, a family of Lombard merchants who had settled in Troyes since 1256, had this astonishing hotel (also known as the Hôtel des Gandelus) built in 1550.

The Lombards, northern Italians, were renowned throughout Europe as money changers and bankers. The adjacent street, known as "de la Montée-des-Changes", led to the Place du Marché-au-Pain which was at the time of the Champagne fairs: the place where they set up their bench, thus giving birth to the word banker. …

The ground floor is built in Champagne checkerboard, a clever and aesthetic blend of brick and limestone, which allowed the walls to retain heat through the brick, and to absorb moisture through the limestone.

Above, the two floors are covered with essences (or shingles) in hazel or chestnut. The 16th century staircase turret. has a conical slate roof. The interior courtyard is half-timbered.
