Troyes
This bridge overhanging a canal of the Seine, marks the site of the old entrance to the city of Troyes in the Middle Ages. Until the 19th century stood a large stone gate, an integral part of the ramparts surrounding the city. Troyes, in the 11th century, was a bustling commercial town. The Jews, whether they were merchants or farmers, lived in perfect harmony with the Christians and the other inhabitants of the city. By taking this door, one entered the district known as Broce-aux-Juifs. Rashi kept his house not far from here and his Yeshiva, that is, his house of study.
