Les Moulins Sassot |
The Nogent-sur-Seine mill dates from the 11th century, and gained importance around 1840 with 15 pairs of millstones. It was acquired by Pierre Sassot in 1880, and he introduced cylinder apparatus there and had a silo built there in 1901. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1907, it was rebuilt the following year by an architect Romillon and a contractor Nogentais. The operating company took the name Minoteries de l'Est in 1925 then SA des moulins de Nogent in 1951. Bought in 1989 by the Bouygues Group, the mill ceased its activity in September 1990 when the daily crushing capacity was 2400 quintals per day. It became the property of the Soufflet Group in 1994, which set up offices there and removed the machines that were there. Two American turbines and a Fontaine turbine installed by Teisset, Brault and Chapron, mechanical builders based in Chartres still exist today. The Mills of 1908, as we know them today, present the most complete form of the industrialization of flour milling, both technically and architecturally. It is the result of the implementation of very significant technical knowledge and capital gathered over several generations within the Sassot family. THE MILLS CANNOT BE VISITED.
