In the 16th century, in parallel with the art of stained glass, the Troyes School style of sculpture developed in Troyes. The gothic churches were adorned with statuaries by the master sculptures: moving polychrome works.
Visitors should in particular take note of the rood-screen in Sainte-Madeleine Church in Troyes, a finely carved work and one of only 9 rood-screens left in place in France.
Champagne and Renaissance
A significant and influential centre of the arts, at the height of the Renaissance period Troyes Champagne provided the clergy with numerous mannerist works that were used to decorate the churches. From the chisels of experienced sculptors flowed virgins’ smiles, the fall of clothing and posture carefully designed to awaken fervour.
Today, the imprint of history can be discovered in each of Champagne’s churches, which have a thousand carved masterpieces from the beautiful Renaissance period on display.
In 2009: a unique exhibition that just cannot be missed.
