Lecture: From the ‘national narrative’ to oblivion: Napoleon through two centuries of school curricula contact@musee-napoleon-brienne.fr |
In this lecture, Olivier Buffy, a history and geography teacher, explores how the figure of Napoleon Bonaparte has been introduced, manipulated, praised, or challenged in school curricula from the July Monarchy to the present day. Reflecting the obsessions, ambitions, and crises of each era, the national narrative shaped by the Republican school system and its predecessors has constantly oscillated between hero worship, the construction of memory, and critical distance, demonstrating that education has never been a neutral act.
