Formerly called rue de l'Epicerie, it has been a shopping street for centuries. At the time of the Champagne fairs, products such as pepper, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg ... are imported and stored by Italians to be resold to merchants in Northern Europe.

In the 16th century, the rue de l'Epicerie became one of the main places of residence of the Trojan printers before becoming the rue Notre Dame (the convent Notre Dame aux Nonnains on the site of the current Prefecture).

Today, rue Emile Zola has once again become the main commercial axis of the city.
