In 1964, this pretty half-timbered house was the first to be renovated in Troyes' historic center.

Maison du Boulanger - Tourelle de l'Orfèvre |
It is a symbol for all lovers of the town: it was due to be razed to the ground, and only a long struggle by local heritage conservationists saved it.
The house is known as the "Baker's House". It is corbelled and has a gable roof with an eaves truss. The dormer window on the roof, which opens onto rue Paillot-de-Montabert, still has the pulley that enabled the bakers to take their flour sacks up to the attic.
Since 1975, it has housed the Centre culturel de Troyes.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, this district, which includes rue du Domino (now rue Paillot-de-Montabert), was home to the silversmiths.
One of them, François Roize, built the house on the opposite corner of the square between 1578 and 1618. Space was so at a premium here that he had his staircase corbelled into a turret with diamond-shaped slate roofs and floors, supported by two caryatids and an atlantean.
